Why I love Finstown Gardens for family photography


With a mixture of greenery, mature trees, pathways and more open areas, Finstown Gardens gives us plenty of variety without having to travel between locations. It works particularly well for relaxed family sessions because there's room to move around rather than feeling like everyone has to stand in one spot and pose.


That variety also means we can create a gallery that feels interesting and natural while keeping the session itself really simple.

Choosing the right location can make such a difference to how a family photography session feels. Somewhere with space to explore, different backdrops and plenty for little ones to do naturally can take away a lot of the pressure of being in front of the camera.

My family sessions aren't about expecting children to sit still and smile at the camera on command. Some of my favourite photographs happen while they're exploring, playing or simply interacting with their family.


A location like Finstown Gardens gives children the freedom to do exactly that. We can walk, play and explore as we go, with a little gentle direction from me when it's needed. It takes the pressure off everyone and gives us much more opportunity to capture genuine expressions and those little moments of connection that make photographs feel like your family.

A beautiful location through the seasons



One of the things I love about photographing outdoors in Orkney is how much our locations change throughout the year. The colours, light and landscape all bring something slightly different to a session, so the same location can produce a completely different feel from one season to another.


And, of course, this is Orkney. We work with the weather rather than pretending it doesn't exist! If conditions aren't quite what we'd hoped for, we'll always make a plan together.
